Thursday 2nd March – hike ***** Playa El Playazo to Faro de la Polacra – sunny and warm :)

Another great night in Spain at Playa El Playazo, woke just before sunrise which is 7.40 so not early, all the other campers missed it but I just had enough time to put on a fleece and nip the short distance to the beach to get a few pics:) While Mag did her exercises by the van I looked out the window to see a young lady completely naked sorting out their beach chairs so they could have breakfast on the beach, not something you see every day and the Belgian camper parked close by got a real eyeful:)We then had a dopey young Germain driving what we thought was a hire car do a handbrake turn close to a couple of large campervans, spun round and drove head on straight into his mate following closely behind, I laughed but the driver was suitably ashamed holding his head in his hands! I then did my exercises in beautiful sunshine - the weather has been perfect here for a week now! Then with supplies running a little low it was only porridge left for breakfast which was yummy with kiwi:)
Several people had arrived and were setting off walking left and right. A group of four English people turned up in a French registered car and headed off the way we walked yesterday afternoon. I thought they were going to another Playa 2 km away as I had seen a notice board. So, Mag found some things for a picnic and we left the van at 11.37 heading up to the coll but taking the footpath this time past the tall palm trees with flowers everywhere mainly the pretty yellow Sorrel. The rocky path ran up and down the coastal hills, past the sea inlet below with signs of wild boar digging along the way. We soon caught up with the four English hikers, a little older than us, two of them lived in France, hence the French car and the other two were friends they had met on a previous holiday. We stopped for a nice chat and were offered one of our favourite Lidl mints, I said does this path lead to another Playa and the team leader said no but up to a lighthouse on the highest hill – he did have a map!
We went ahead as one of the ladies, Yvonne, had dodgy hips and knees and was finding the path a little hard going, we got to an access road to the lighthouse and phone masts which was nice and easy to walk and gave stunning views along the coast we will be travelling along tomorrow. We reached the Faro de la Polacra well ahead and had already taken some tripod selfies and found a top picnic spot by the lighthouse wall with a huge drop to the blue sea far below when we were joined by the others for their picnic lunch:) We had a great chat learning about their much travelled life and a little about local life including the fact that the hippy commune they were taking the lager to yesterday has terrible problems with TB and they have been carting them off to hospital lately!! They said they were going a different way back so we joined them and had a lovely afternoon enjoying their company:) Passing olive trees and beautiful countryside made even better by the blue skies and 20 degree temperatures. Then at the inland fort we turned slightly right towards the tall palms and found a couple of restored donkey driven water wheels for pumping water. Back at the van after 4hrs 20 minutes covering a little over 6.35 miles we said our goodbyes, made a flask and headed to our spot on the beach to read for an hour or so.
By this time, we had 12/14 vans of all different sizes and nationalities preparing to stay here the night ranging from large van with satellite dishes, an old lady with two dogs sleeping in her car, the young hippy couple and their son, to a man by himself in a VW like ours spending ages picking the wild flowers and tenderly arranging then in a 5 lt. water bottle:) Then a first for us! After we had eaten a yummy omelette and it was getting dark our peace and quiet was rudely broken by a white 4x4 with flashing yellow lights and at one point his siren going riding around the carpark!!!! There was some confusion as it turned out to be an ambulance but things became clear when they started knocking on campervan doors and very politely asking us to leave. We had all seen the signs saying no overnight parking but we had all ignored it hoping to get away with it which we did last night. Especially as the police who visited yesterday didn’t seem bothered at all!! This must be a constant problem for them down this way in this lovely Parque National with limited access to the coast and we have had no problem finding other places to park in a very campervan friendly Spain.
We quickly packed up and followed the two German campers out three miles to the next village where there were several vans parked in a carpark. Not being ones to follow the crowd we headed a little further up the road and found a spot overlooking the village. So another eventful day in Spain enjoying every minute:)
